size of the old 昔の大きさ

This bridal "tateya" obi style is very large in size compared to what is often seen today.  A couple of decades ago, this size was the norm.  Old maru-obi are very luxurious and expensive; thus heavy, stiff and inflexible.  Obi styles were therefore much simpler and attention was given to showing off as much of the surface as possible.  

大きな花嫁用の立て矢ですね。古くから着付けをなさっている先生がいうには、一昔前はこれぐらい大きく作っていたそうです。昔の丸帯は豪華で高価なものでした。それだけ帯も厚みがあり堅かったものです。堅い分だけ結びはシンプルに、豪華な面をより多く見せる分だけ大きく結んでいたようです。

It is important (and fun!) for students to try to think of original obi styles.  Here are two quite good examples.

Some times people ask if / why we need certificates for kitsuke.
My take on certificates for kitsuke is the same as it is for all and any certificate.
One gentleman put it most appropriately so I shall quote.
"Certificates are hurdles we set for ourselves in order to clear a goal.  Never think you can make a living just by getting a certificate."


着付けに資格は意味あるかどうか、という質問をする人がよくいます。
私の資格についての考えは、着付けを含む全ての資格においで同じです。
ある人が言った言葉が一番適切だと思います。
「資格というのは、ある目標をクリアするために自分でセットしたハードルみたいなものであり、 それで飯を食おうとは思わないほうがいいのだ。」

These two are suppose to be the same obi style.  But as you can see they can turn out very differently depending on the student.  No better or worse, just different interpretations.
この二つは同じ帯結びです。結び手によってかなり仕上がりが違うのがわかります。
良い悪いの問題ではなく、なにを重点に持ってくるかの感性の違いでしょう。

International Hougaku* Concert

インターナショナル邦楽の集い

縁あって外国人出演者の着付を依頼されました。
みなさんとてもサマになっていました。日本文化を愛する気持ちが観客側にしっかり伝わったように思います。
I was asked to dress the foreign nationals participating in the concert.  Everybody looked fantastic in kimono!  Their love for Japanese culture was definitely felt by all.
